Plum's Katie O'Brien Interviewed for the November 4, 2014 Vancouver Sun

Tuesday Nov. 4 2014

Plum's buyer, Katie O'Brien, was interviewed in the Arts and Life section of the November 4, 2014 print edition and website of the Vancouver Sun. Pictured with the article are the Canyon Road Aztec print sweater, $79, convertible shawl scarf, $49, and Mavi Alexa deep Napoli jeans, $98 - all available at Plum retail stores.

Excerpt from the article:

In fact, she says, “This is by far and away the biggest season in knitwear I have seen in my career as a buyer. All that means is my customers have never had so much choice in whatever their hearts desire. It seems that there is something for all ages and body types. But then that seems to be the direction the fashion industry is going in general.”

Just about every knitwear shape, length, style, colour and texture is in fashion right now. And this season’s knitwear goes well beyond the sweater — you will also see it in skirts, dresses, accessories and outerwear...

O’Brien is also loving the cosy, fuzzy knits that are appearing in everything from solid colours to graphic designs, often inspired by Aztec or Navajo traditions. “Many of these can be seen in open cardigans that do double duty as outerwear,” she says. “There is also a revival of the chunky cable knits that come in many forms. The favourite, of course, is those creamy off-whites and camels.”

But, she adds, “If texture is not your thing, there is the perennial favourite, a soft, luxurious cashmere blend in both classic and trendy silhouettes.”

When it comes to shape and silhouette, perhaps the most exciting trend is the return of the long-lost poncho. And not just the poncho, but the whole world of easy-to-wear outer-layer knitwear, including cocoons, wraps, blanket sweaters and flyway cardigans.

It’s a “big, big, big trend,” O’Brien says, adding, “I don’t think there have been as many alternatives in this category since the ’70s.”
